Our dogs are usually the most important canine fixtures in our life, but there are some dogs everyone seems to know about. Whether they’re the dogs of presidents or superstars, or they lead successful lives themselves, there’s no denying that there’s a world of canine superstardom. Here at Silver Nickel Puppies, we love all dogs, but it’s fun to pay tribute to the dogs everyone knows and loves. Without further ado, we mention some of the most famous dogs of all time.
Dogs who belonged to some of our nation’s presidents are obviously well known. One such dog, Bo Obama, the portuguese water dog who belonged to the Obama family, filled a particularly large space in all of our hearts. Bo was so well known, arguably, because of his mention in Obama’s 2008 acceptance speech. Obama is quoted saying, “Sasha and Malia … I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us … to the White House.” Another popular presidential puppy is Millie Bush. Millie was an English springer spaniel that belonged to Barbara and George H.W. Bush. She was so famous that she even had her book! The book was properly titled, Millie’s Book. Millie was a staple of the white house throughout George H.W. Bush’s entire presidency. Bill Clinton also had a love for pups. His chocolate labrador, Buddy, became a part of the Clinton White House Family in 2017. Allegedly, Buddy was not so friendly to the Clintons’ cat, so they had to be kept in seperate areas. Fala Roosevelt was another famous presidential dog. Belonging to one of the most famous presidents ever, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Fala was frequently covered by the media during the times. She is also the only presidential pet to be honored with a statue- she appears next to FDR at the renowned Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington D.C. FDR was so passionate about his dog that he mentioned her in a statement he said as a response to rumors that Fala was costing taxpayers money, “I am accustomed to hearing malicious falsehoods about myself,” the president said. “But I think I have a right to resent, to object, to libelous statements about my dog!”
However, there are some dogs that got famous on their own accord. Laika was a Russian dog who started off from humble origins. She was a street dog until she was selected for a huge Russian mission. She was the only passenger on the Sputnik 2, making her the first animal to every orbit the earth. It was revealed in 2002 that she died during orbit, which was a big deal, as officials during the 1950’s and 1960’s stated that she was euthanized after returning safely. Nonetheless, a small statue of Laika was created nearby the research facility where she was trained and prepared for space.
Perhaps the most famous dog ever is Lassie, but it’s important to realize she was a fictional character created by Eric Knight. However, there is a real dog behind the movie- Pal, who played Lassie in the Lassie film series.
No matter which famous dogs you love the most, if you are looking for a puppy to become the star of your life, look no further than Silver Nickel Puppies. We have your new best friend here, just waiting for you!
